The first signs of spring are here as green shoots are starting to appear along the woodland floor at By the Wye, making this the perfect time to visit for an Easter Holiday in Wales. Soon the woodland will begin to transform into a luscious green wonderland and birdsong will echo through the trees, just in time for us to open on the 31st of March. It is a time of new growth with lots of beautiful nature for you and your family to seek out. Here’s what you can expect to find in the woods at By the Wye this spring!
Spring blooms
Spring Wildflowers are what makes our Woods in Hay-on-Wye particularly beautiful, from the dazzling Bluebells to the tiny Dog Violets, not only do they make for a gorgeous woodland walk, but they provide precious nectar for invertebrates. Snowdrops, Bluebells and Daffodils are already starting to appear and very soon the forest floor will become filled with a carpet of bright colours. Bees will soon be buzzing from flower to flower, working hard to pollinate.
New life begins
The River Wye is home to a thriving population of ducks, geese, and swans and from March onwards, you could be lucky enough to witness their tiny, fluffy babies taking their first steps in the world. The like to nest in the banks of the river and you can sometimes even spot them from the decks of the safari tents. Bring your camera, this is not a sight to be missed!
Our woodland hosts plenty of wildlife and now is a wonderful time to spot them. Look under rocks for creepy crawlies, look up in the trees for birds, see friendly squirrels playing and maybe even spot an elusive otter on the river bank. Find out more about what species you can expect to find in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
