Rising on the slopes of Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains, the River Wye (Afon Gwy in Welsh) flows for approximately 152 miles in a generally south easterly direction. It is the fifth longest river in the UK. It passes through Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, before joining the Severn Estuary at Chepstow.
River Wye Fishing
The River Wye offers a unique fishing holiday experience unlike anywhere else in the UK. The Wye Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty making for some fantastic scenery for your fishing holiday. Our glamping site is hidden in the heart of Hay on Wye right on the Powys/Herefordshire border.
The stretch of the River Wye in Hay on Wye offers some fantastic public fishing for barbel, chub, roach, dace, pike, grayling, trout and salmon. The mile stretch of the River Wye through Hay on Wye is perfect for a fishing holiday because it has a variety of features. It has deeper slower moving sections and a pebble beach, known as The Warren, which is perfect for trout, barbel and smaller fish. There is also a croy that puts fishermen in a prime position in the deeper waters where the fast-flowing water moves over bigger fish. The River Wye really is the perfect location for a fishing holiday this year.
You can book a River Wye day ticket fishing through the Wye and Usk foundation for your stay.
River Wye Fly Fishing
Although this stretch of the River Wye is primarily coarse fishing, under the right conditions fly fishing is good too. There is a nice pebble beach down at The Warren which is good for casting off.
There is salmon in the early season depending on the run and you’ll often see salmon jumping out of the water in the evening in a golden flash. It’s also a very good trout stretch.
Coarse Fishing River Wye
The most common coarse fish caught in the River Wye are barbel and chub, the fish caught here are of really good quality and good condition. Recent catches include: -Barbel 131b 8oz, these generally run in the 6 – 91b range Pike 281b 8oz, 201b pike are quite common Chub 61b, 41b chub are very common
The River Wye is a very clean river. This means the water here is clear so it allows sun rays to beam through which give the barbel and chub a lovely gold colouring to them which in other waters they may be pretty pale.
It’s one of the better barbel swims on the Wye. While it is popular it is not overcrowded as it’s limited to the Wye and Usk. Our location is great for Wye barbel fishing holidays with some superb fighting barbel available.
